What Makes Spring Assisted Knives Different from Automatic Knives?

Knives play an important role in our lives. In fact, we cannot imagine our lives without them. For majority of our population, there is not a single day when we don’t make use of them. Their existence goes back to the stone age and the designs and construction materials are evolving since then.

One of the most popular knives are spring assisted knives. Assisted knives are actually folding knives which have a thumb stud to be pressed with the flick of your thumb to open the blade. And that’s where the main difference between spring assisted knives and automatic knives lie.

There is a lot of confusion in the minds of people when it comes to assisted opening knives. Even those who use quite often don’t know the basic difference between a spring assisted knife and a automatic switchblade. The difference is a very minor one and lies in the lever or button of the knife. Well let’s understand it with more detail.

Spring Assisted Knives vs Automatic Knives

Spring Assisted Knives

Commonly, the mechanism of spring assisted knives work in a way that there is a spring which opens the blade when necessary force is exerted upon it. The knife has a flipper which does not allow the knife to be opened on its own and serves as a precautionary measure.

The knife’s mechanism has to be overcomed and necessary force must be applied in order to open the knife. When this is done, only then the spring mechanism opens the blade. Because of this safe mechanism, you can easily tuck these knives in your pocket.

Automatic Knives

Automatic Knives have a button instead of a thumb stud. This button does not require any force to operate unlike a thumb stud which requires manpower i.e. a slight force from a thumb to open the blade of the knife. It also has a spring mechanism but in this case, the spring mechanism is connected to the button. As soon as the button is pressed, the spring releases the tension and the blade of the knife comes out.

So, now we know that the key difference between spring assisted knives and automatic knives lie in the lever of the knife. The former require some power to operate whereas the latter only require the button or lever to be pressed.

Also, that is what makes spring assisted knives safer than automatic knives. Automatic knives are illegal in most of the states as the button can be pressed accidentally resulting in injuries and is hence considered unsafe. So, do check the laws of your state before buying them!
